The Public Transport Modernization Program, commonly referred to as the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, was designed by the Department of Transportation in 2017, with the goal of phasing out jeepneys, buses and other public utility vehicles that are at least 15 years old and replacing them with safer, more comfortable and more environmentally friendly alternatives.
In a statement, Piston said it has reminded Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon that the failure of the program was no longer a secret, adding drivers and operators have been opposing it for eight years. The group bemoaned that because of the haphazard implementation of the program, many operators were barred from renewing their franchises resulting in destroyed livelihood and hardship for commuters. Piston said it would launch a transport strike if the DOTr failed to resolve the problem in 10 days.
