Liberal frontbenchers Alan Tudge and Dan Tehan have been frozen out of question time by Peter Dutton’s opposition, with neither man having asked a single question in the current parliament.
Labor’s tight control on which shadow ministers were making media appearances and which were kept from the spotlight – the so-called “chosen and the frozen”.
The use of Dutton, Ley and Taylor, in particular, indicates the opposition is trying to move on quickly from the Morrison government and present a refreshed front bench. Joyce’s lack of questions suggests the Coalition is conscious that he was a drag on their vote in the inner city at the last election, as reflected in internal party polling. The spread of questions being asked to Labor ministers by their own side, known as a Dorothy Dixer question, is more even-handed than the spread of who is asking questions for the opposition. Analysing which ministers are being questioned reveals a government’s policy and political priorities.
Junior ministers Anne Aly and Anika Wells have answered more questions from their own backbench than many cabinet ministers, which reflects the fact their policy responsibilities of childcare and aged care respectively have been government priorities – also suggesting their political stars are on the rise.
