The NSW Liberals have agreed to a deal on an upper house ticket that would add two extra women to parliament at the March state election, avoiding a drawn-out summer preselection battle and major embarrassment for the premier.

In a move the party will tout as a big win for gender parity, new female candidates Rachel Merton and Susan Carter will appear on the party’s upper house ticket, while Families Minister Natasha Maclaren-Jones – who is midway through her term – will top the list and be given a fresh eight-year stint.

However, negotiations succeeded in swapping right-winger Jean Haynes – who was on Perrottet’s initial proposed ticket – for Merton, who is McLaren-Jones’ deputy chief of staff. Haynes, who the moderates did not see as an appropriate candidate, was removed to secure the deal. Perrottet’s plea this month for the party to not endorse a male candidate for Pittwater, one of the government’s most at-risk seats, was ignored by the state executive, which endorsed
