In a video seen by Guardian Australia, a sole officer stands next to a young man at a pool party and watches him handle a can of pepper spray. While some of the man’s friends warn him not to deploy the spray, others can be heard egging him on as they take out their phones to film. The officer does not intervene at any point. Instead, he smiles and watches on as the man turns the spray into his eyes and fires it before keeling over in pain.

The video was uploaded to a private police Facebook group with the caption “DIY OC. New Year’s resolution: Do Not Let Members Of The Public Use My OC…EVER!!!”Pepper spray – also known as OC spray – is classed as a weapon in Queensland. It is illegal to possess or use it in the state, unless you have a valid license and registration.
