Lawyers for Alberta and Saskatchewan say they were not properly consulted when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Canada’s premiers hours before invoking the Emergencies Act. On Thursday, the Public Order Emergency Commission began its six-week review of the federal government’s use of emergency powers to deal with protests and blockades across the country. The first day primarily set the table for how the inquiry was to proceed and gave lawyers a chance to introduce themselves.
Mandy England, a lawyer with the Alberta government, wasted no time in outlining the main arguments for why she believes Ottawa should not have used the act on Feb. 14. She said none of the emergency powers under the act were necessary since the blockade at the Coutts border crossing had already been resolved.
