The inquiry into the federal government’s use of emergency powers in February will hear more from convoy organizers than the people who were impacted by the occupation, says an Ottawa lawyer.
On Tuesday, the Public Order Emergency Commission released a list of 65 witnesses expected to appear in person during the inquiry, which is scheduled to start on Thursday. The list includes government officials, police, downtown Ottawa businesses and residents, organizers of the so-called freedom convoy and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The commission is reviewing the government’s use of the never-before-used Emergencies Act on Feb. 14. The emergency powers were used in response to protests and blockades across the country, including a massive occupation of Ottawa’s downtown. Use of the Emergencies Act automatically triggers the requirement to hold an inquiry.
