Team chief executive RC Buford shared an update on Wednesday in Paris, where the Spurs are set to face the Indiana Pacers twice this week. While Popovich's progress is positive, Buford acknowledged the difficulty in predicting a timeline for his return.
'His improvement continues to get better, (but) I don't know that we have any way to judge the clock,' Buford stated. 'Predicting what's to come is just a function of where Pop's rehab goes.' Popovich suffered a mild stroke on November 2nd. In his absence, interim coach Mitch Johnson has guided the Spurs to a 17-19 record (19-22 overall). Popovich, who has been at the helm of the Spurs since the 1996-97 season, has led the team to five NBA championships. The legendary coach, who will turn 76 next week, remains actively involved despite his recovery. Johnson revealed that Popovich frequently communicates with him, offering insights and feedback. 'He's watching the games, still as opinionated and competitive as ever,' Johnson shared in Paris. 'He's giving praise and cussing me out all at the same time.' Johnson described their communication as 'consistent,' emphasizing their focus on improvement. 'Our conversations are all about how we can improve. We break down the last game, what we need to adjust, and what we're preparing for next,' Johnson explained. Chris Paul, in his first season with the Spurs, also appreciates Popovich's continued guidance. 'He calls me after games and I talk to him and he tells me what he sees,' Paul said. 'And I appreciate that more than anything because he doesn't have to do that.' Popovich holds a remarkable career record of 1,407-843 in 2,250 games with the Spurs.
