International travel to the Philippines has experienced a remarkable resurgence, nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels as tourist arrivals continue to climb steadily. The Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported that international arrivals in 2024 totaled 14,733,597, a significant rebound from the 17,085,097 recorded in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic brought global travel to a standstill. 'The figures we are seeing are a good sign.
It shows that revenge travel is real, and that international travel and tourism has regained its momentum after the worldwide health crisis,' said Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado on Sunday.Viado expressed optimism that international travel would maintain its upward trajectory throughout the year, potentially surpassing pre-pandemic figures. He emphasized the BI's crucial role in facilitating tourism growth by streamlining immigration processes while upholding stringent border security measures. Viado stated, 'The bureau is committed to supporting the country's tourism recovery, in line with the President's vision of strengthening the Philippine economy through increased foreign arrivals and enhanced international connectivity.'The return of international arrivals to near pre-pandemic levels is a testament to the Philippines' enduring appeal as a top tourist destination. South Korea continued to be the primary source of foreign visitors, with 1,761,281 arrivals, followed by the United States with 1,325,684 and China with 500,082 inbound travelers. Other key markets included Japan, Australia, Canada, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, India, and Singapore. The BI recognizes South Korea's significance in the Philippine tourism landscape and actively supports the country's efforts to sustain and increase arrivals from Japan, given the strong cultural and travel exchange between the two nations. India and Singapore have also demonstrated considerable potential for future growth. To further bolster the tourism industry, Viado stated that the BI fully supports the government's initiatives. The agency will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that immigration policies remain aligned with global tourism trends, making the Philippines an even more accessible and welcoming destination. Foreign tourists are encouraged to explore the Philippines' diverse offerings by making immigration services convenient and readily available. Viado highlighted that visa extensions and other necessary services are easily accessible through its extensive network of over 60 offices nationwide or conveniently online via e-services at immigration.gov.ph.
