Recent reports of Chinese vessels encroaching on the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) have prompted a strong response from the US and the Philippines. The defense chiefs of both nations recently held a significant discussion emphasizing the need to reestablish deterrence in the South China Sea. This comes amidst ongoing joint patrols conducted by the Philippines and the US within the Philippines' EEZ, as well as US 'freedom of navigation' patrols in the disputed waters.

The defense chiefs of the Philippines and the United States recently engaged in a crucial discussion regarding efforts to reestablish deterrence in the South China Sea . This conversation follows reports of Chinese vessels encroaching on the Philippines ' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In a statement, the Pentagon revealed that Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held an introductory call to assess defense cooperation between the two nations.

According to Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot, the leaders emphasized the significance of reestablishing deterrence in the South China Sea, including collaborative efforts with allies and partners. They also delved into enhancing the capability and capacity of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The Philippines and the US have recently undertaken joint air and maritime patrols within the country's EEZ, which has been subject to intrusions by Chinese vessels in recent months. The US has also conducted its own 'freedom of navigation' patrols in the South China Sea, a region where China has established military outposts on reclaimed reefs and islets. The US has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines, underscoring its role in maintaining a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Hegseth emphasized the US’ “ironclad commitment” to the treaty and pledged to maintain close coordination with Teodoro. The Pentagon further stated that Hegseth highlighted the pivotal importance of the US-Philippines alliance in ensuring the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific. This discussion between the two defense chiefs arises amidst recent reports of Chinese warships in Philippine archipelagic waters. The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) recently reported the presence of three Chinese warships navigating through the Mindoro Strait towards the Sulu Sea. WestMinCom Chief LtGen. Antonio Nafarrete pointed out that China had not diplomatically coordinated with the Philippines regarding the presence of these ships, which were traveling at an “unusually” slow speed of 4 to 5 knots. This incident underscores the urgent need for continued cooperation between the Philippines and the US to foster regional security and stability. The two countries share a longstanding alliance, and their collaborative efforts on defense and security matters are crucial in preserving peace and stability in the region
