The Philippine automotive market reveals interesting trends with the Toyota Vios leading sales and a resurgence in electrified vehicles. The iconic Toyota Hilux maintains its dominance in the pickup truck segment, while the Mitsubishi Mirage and Xpander engage in a close battle for third and fourth place. Luxury vehicles from Lexus outsell BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and the rise of MPVs hints at a shift in consumer preferences.
Insights about 2024’s top selling vehicles in the Philippines have revealed some interesting trends in the automotive market . While some results were predictable, 2024 also brought a few surprises. The Toyota Vios sedan continues to reign supreme as the nation's best-selling car, with a commanding lead of 43,636 units sold. This success solidifies Toyota Motor Philippines' position and ensures the continued production of this locally-made vehicle, supporting jobs and the local economy.
The Toyota Hilux pickup truck takes the second spot, selling 26,643 units in 2024. It outperformed competitors like the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara, illustrating the enduring popularity of this workhorse model. A close battle ensues for the third, fourth, and fifth positions. The Mirage and Xpander, both from Mitsubishi, achieved almost identical sales figures of 26,000 units each. The Hilux holds a narrow lead over the Mirage, selling 26,313 units. The Xpander, with 26,242 units sold, is just 71 units behind the Mirage, suggesting a potential shift in the rankings in 2025. Toyota's luxury division, Lexus, continues to outperform rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Lexus sold 2,263 units in 2024, leaving BMW with 815 units and Mercedes-Benz with 737 units. This dominance could be attributed to Lexus' diverse lineup of SUVs, ranging from the compact LBX to the larger RX and LX models, along with the luxury hybrid van, the LM. Interestingly, two popular SUVs - the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero Sport - did not make the top 10 list. The Toyota HiAce van surprisingly outsold both models, racking up 15,744 units compared to 12,408 Fortuner and 10,687 Montero Sport sales. This indicates a shift in consumer preference towards 7-seater MPVs like the Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Innova, and Avanza, all of which outsold the Fortuner and Montero Sport. Another notable trend is the growing popularity of electrified vehicles. Toyota continues to lead the hybrid market with the Yaris Cross and Corolla Cross. However, the plug-in hybrid segment has seen a resurgence, fueled by the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, which sold 2,669 units. BYD also leads in battery electric vehicles with the Atto 3, selling 1,062 units. Finally, a surprising revelation is the sale of three units of the discontinued Toyota FJ Cruiser in 2024. Despite being officially discontinued in 2023, these units, at least two years old, continue to be sought after, highlighting the enduring appeal of this iconic model. The three individuals fortunate enough to acquire these rare vehicles will undoubtedly possess a unique piece of automotive history
