Brig. Gen. Michael Samson, the new commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, believes Western and Central Visayas are nearing freedom from the New People's Army. He emphasizes the need to address remaining pockets of armed rebels and encourages them to surrender and rejoin society.
ILOILO CITY – Brig. Gen. Michael Samson , the newly appointed chief of the 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army , expressed confidence that Western and Central Visayas are progressing towards becoming free from the influence of the New People's Army ( NPA ). In his initial statement after assuming command from Major Gen.
Marion Sison, Samson emphasized that while significant strides have been made, the ultimate goal of declaring these regions insurgency-free hinges on addressing the remaining pockets of armed rebels who operate by evading government forces. Samson's previous role as commander of the 301st Infantry Brigade in Panay Island yielded notable successes. He spearheaded the dismantling of the Southern Front Committee, which was active in the southern Iloilo province and Antique, and led the takedown of the NPA Central Front Committee operating in Capiz, Aklan, and Iloilo. With a broadened scope as the 3rd ID commander, Samson underscored the importance of continuing this momentum against the NPA in other parts of the two regions, including Negros Island, Cebu, and Bohol. His strategy focuses on pressuring the rebels to abandon their armed struggle and recognize the futility of fighting the government. Samson aims to guide them towards rejoining mainstream society as contributing members of the nation
