Xiangqi or Chinese chess may not be popular yet in the country but the people behind the Philippine Xiangqi Federation are hoping this major tournament can entice more Filipinos to play the game.
Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou said the Philippine Xiangqi Open Tournament, slated at the federation's headquarters in Binondo, Manila on July 7, 13 and 14, offers a total prize money of P213 ,000. ' Xiangqi is part of the Chinese tradition and for many years it has been played in the Philippines and around the world. Now, we have an opportunity to raise awareness for the game,' said Zhou.
The players in the tournament dubbed as the 'Thousand Islands Cup' are divided into two groups depending on their strength.In Group A, the champion will take home the P50,000 while the runner-up will take home P30,000 and the third placer will receive P20,000.In Group B, the winner pockets P20,000 while the second and third placers get P12,000 and P10,000, respectively.Xiangqi is a two-player board game similar to chess that was invented in China.
