(UPDATES) TWO Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ships sustained serious damage Monday in pre-dawn collisions with Chinese vessels near Escoda (Sabina) Shoal, the PCG said, as Beijing stepped up efforts to push its claims in the South China Sea.

The NTF-WPS urged restraint and adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other relevant international laws to prevent further escalations and to ensure the safety of all vessels operating in the region.The China Coast Guard , on the other hand, said the PCG vessels ignored its repeated warnings and were the ones that 'deliberately collided' with its ships in an 'unprofessional and dangerous' manner.
