THE naval forces in Northern Luzon inaugurated a detachment in Batanes to serve as an observation post to safeguard the country's territories against foreign incursions.
The naval detachment is located at the Mavulis Island in Itbayat, some 150 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's main island, about 98 kilometers away from the nearest Taiwanese Island and 280 kilometers off the northern coast of Luzon, the Northern Luzon Command said.
The commissioning of the Mavulis outpost will play a crucial role not only in protecting the nation's sovereignty against aggressive actions by other countries, especially China, but to monitor a possible invasion of Taiwan by Beijing. The outpost will serve to insulate its potential adverse risk to Batanes public safety.
