RICE development was a key discussion point between the Philippines and Laos at the World Food Forum held October 14 in Rome.
The two Southeast Asian countries, represented by Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Lao People's Democratic Republic Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Linkham Douangsavanh, proposed a memorandum of understanding to promote agricultural cooperation, specifically to establish a joint genetic bank to develop rice production.
In general, the talks sought to enhance food security and sustainable agricultural development across Southeast Asia.Other points discussed were value chain improvement of various agricultural products including rice, corn, coffee, fruit trees, tea, livestock and fisheries; and facilitating trade in sugarcane and coffee; and sustainable water management in agriculture, research and development, and climate change mitigation.The MoU will be finalized by 2025.
