UST Golden Tigresses team captain Detdet Pepito remains optimistic despite her team's second consecutive loss in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament. The Tigresses fell to FEU Lady Tamaraws in a thrilling five-set match, 22-25, 24-26, 25-17, 24-26, at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday. Pepito acknowledges that her team struggles with patience, particularly when things don't go their way.
She observed that players tend to become frustrated easily and lose trust in themselves and their teammates. 'My patience is still there. One of the problems we talked about as a team is patience with each other. I try to remind everyone to have trust in themselves and in each other,' said Pepito, a two-time Best Libero awardee. 'When someone makes a mistake, it feels like the world's ending. I can see it in their faces, the way they hold themselves, and I can tell they've given up. That's been a big challenge for me this season because we really lack patience, especially among us players. I hope we can work on that more and keep talking about it since we're all open to it.'Pepito sees progress in the team's floor defense, noting that opponents are adapting their strategies to avoid her strong defense. She believes this shows improvement in her team's overall defensive capabilities. 'You can clearly see it. I don't know, it's just that sometimes the ball just doesn't come my way in passing,' said Pepito, who recorded 12 digs out of 24 attempts and 7 receptions out of 13 attempts. As a team, UST achieved 74 digs out of 160 attempts and 35 receptions out of 84 attempts. Despite the loss, Pepito remains focused on the team's goals of securing a Final Four spot and potentially finishing in the top two to earn a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals.
