Foreign Minister Penny Wong has outlined her expectations for the sixth Australia-China Foreign and Strategic Dialogue and what she will put to counterpart Wang Yi.

Ms Wong is travelling to China on Tuesday for the first dialogue of its kind since 2018, as the Albanese Government continues to attempt to repair the strained bilateral relationship.

“Speculation about outcomes obviously has implications for leverage, and I am not interested in giving any country leverage other than Australia.” Ms Wong said she would raise Australia’s concerns with China’s trade tariffs when she meets with counterpart Wang Yi, as well as the detainment of journalist Cheng Lei and pro-democracy author Yang Hengjun.

The dialogue also builds on Mr Albanese's recent meeting with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 Summit and Ms Wong’s increased correspondence with her Chinese counterpart. “Dialogue is where some of the difficult issues and they are difficult issues different interests, different views have to be resolved and have to be dealt with and dialogue is an essential prerequisite for that.”
