A discrepancy was discovered during the city's hosting of the Palarong Pambansa as the newly refurbished oval track's measurement is apparently short by two meters.Department of Education Assistant Secretary Cesar Bringas said the track oval was measured at 398 meters, two meters short of the international standard of 400 meters.Garcia said in a press conference at the City Hall that the P57-million project to renovate the rubberized track was awarded to SBD Builders in October 2023 by suspended Mayor Michael Rama.The contractor received the notice to proceed in January 2024.The CCSC was closed for rehabilitation on May 2023 and was reopened to the public less than two weeks before the opening of the Palarong Pambansa.This shortfall has sparked discussions on potential contributing factors and Bringas said DepEd has tapped a third party to look into the factors that may have inadvertently altered the original distance of the oval.Additional changes in the track's design or the addition of safety features like drainage gutters might also have contributed to the reduction in length, he said.Bringas also said that some records set at the track during the games may not be authenticated and recognized.Chairman John Pages of the Cebu City Sports Commission acknowledged the need to address the discrepancy but expressed confidence in the CCSC's capacity to host athletics events.He pointed to the center's history of hosting major sporting events, including the 1994 Palarong Pambansa, as evidence of its capabilities.
