Malacañang is expressing hope that China will keep an open mind about discussing the 2016 Arbitral ruling on the West Philippine Sea, saying the two countries are friends who can talk about anything.
Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo issued the statement a day before President Duterte’s scheduled bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping here.
Panelo was referring to the Reed Bank incident where 22 Filipino fishermen were abandoned by the Chinese vessel that hit their fishing boat in June this year as one of the irritants. He also mentioned the passage of warships in the Philippines’ territorial waters. “Well, we have the mechanism of negotiations so we have to use that. Again, the President, and from what I hear from the President of China in his talks before, that China is always open to discussion and talks and negotiations,” Panelo said.
“Maybe that is the result of the friendship that we’ve been saying between the two countries and therefore it’s mutually beneficial because both countries are agreeing on a modus vivendi with respect to the exploitation of natural resources,” he added. “There are so many issues that we can agree on. The trade relations, the people-to-people exchange, the cultural exchanges, and many others that is mutually beneficial to both countries,” he added.
