MANY of us residing in Metro Manila have just returned from our sojourn in the provinces for the Holy Week observances. Many associate Lent with the rural and the provincial, not realizing that Metro Manila and many highly urbanized areas today were once rural, too, and had cultivated very rich Lenten traditions.
On the evening of Maundy Thursday to Good Friday, there is the procession of the Black Nazarene at the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo, where the devotees called 'mamamasan' are once again shouting and doing the 'salya!' as a form of bayanihan to bring the Black Nazarene around in an awesome display of emotion and people power.
The apostles were now dressed as mamamasan carrying the rope and the andas, being mocked by the Pharisees, just as present-day devotees are mocked by some people as fanatical. The meeting of the mother and son was portrayed as Dungaw.
