The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Monday that over 220 Filipino prisoners in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been granted pardons by the UAE government. This brings the total number of Filipinos released from UAE prisons due to pardons since June 2024 to over 300. The pardons were granted in celebration of the UAE's National Day on December 2, 2024, as a testament to the 'distinguished friendship between the two countries'. DFA Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro highlighted that this was a direct result of President Marcos' meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan last November. The DFA and the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi are currently processing the documents of the pardoned Filipinos to facilitate their return to the Philippines. President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. expressed his gratitude to the UAE government for the compassionate gesture.
