Filipinos have witnessed a bitter feud between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte in recent months. Just over two years ago, Marcos and Duterte joined forces under UniTeam, leading to their victories in the 2022 elections on a platform of national unity. However, their political alliance has faced challenges due to major differences, such as Marcos' rejection of the bloody drug war initiated by Duterte's father, Rodrigo Duterte, during his presidency.
There have also been congressional inquiries into Vice President Duterte's use of confidential funds and the drug-related deaths during her father's administration. These hearings, conducted for 10 to 12 hours daily, prompted retaliatory responses from the Vice President. Duterte has stated that she and Marcos were never friends and told lawmakers, 'you can throw my ashes to the wind, but I will remain unbowed.' In a live press conference, she threatened to exhume the body of former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and throw it into the West Philippine Sea (WPS) if attacks against her continued. She also claimed to have dreamt of cutting off the president's head. The situation escalated when Duterte cursed the President, his wife Liza, and Marcos' cousin Speaker Martin Romualdez, even issuing a 'conditional revenge' statement that she had hired an assassin to kill them if she were to die. Marcos responded by stating that he would not tolerate any criminal attempts. Since then, three impeachment complaints against Duterte have been filed with the House of Representatives. Furthermore, Congress has reduced more than half of the proposed P2 billion budget for Duterte's office for 2025, leaving her with P733 million. 'Ilabas na and popcorn (Bring out the popcorn),' some have jokingly remarked, while business groups have expressed a cautious expectation that, despite the 'politically challenging times... we still have a regular business as usual situation.
