The Games weren’t looking promising for Canada — or the United States either — at this point. The Swiss ruled the mountains; East and West Germans were dominating luge; and the Soviets were scooping up the most medals in cross-country events. Even in hockey, the United States fell to Czechoslovakia and the Soviets continued to show their razor-sharp skills on the ice, beating Austria in a game where they scored three goals within 61 seconds.
Rumours swirled that three Romanian female speedskaters and their coach had defected, but the truth was the four had simply decided to leave Canada before their competition began. No official reason was given for their abrupt departure, but the coach had told others at the Olympic Oval there were problems at home that could necessitate a quick return.
