Olympic Rewind Day Two: A Finn flies, Jansen falls and Eddie soars — 'Now I'm an Olympian' yyc

Winds of up to 160 km/hr created a swirl of trouble at Nakiska on Mount Allan, where the men’s downhill ski race was postponed. Thousands of spectators with $30 admission tickets fought three-hour traffic jams to get to the mountain, only to find out they had to turn around and head back to Calgary because the race had been rescheduled.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

The most heartbreaking Olympic story of the day, however, belonged to Dan Jansen. The U.S. world sprint champion in speedskating — and medal favourite — found out just hours before the 500-metre event that his sister had died of the leukemia she’d been fighting for more than a year. Ten seconds into his race, Jansen slipped and fell — his Olympic dream and hope for his sister crushed in one day.

The 500-metre speedskating event was the first medal competition at the Olympic Oval and organizers were excited to see the winner — East Germany’s Uwe-Jens Mey — break a world record time in his golden performance. The Oval was indeed home to fast ice. Another golden moment creating buzz came from ski jumper Matti Nykanen, who later in his life became a male stripper. No other competitors could match his soaring flight through the air in the 70-metre ski jump event at Canada Olympic Park, leading Finnish coach Matti Pulli to say, “After his first jump today, it would have taken an angel to jump far enough to beat him.”

The ski jumping event attracted 52,000 spectators in the bowl at the bottom of the run, all of whom provided plenty of cheers and encouragement for Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards, who came in a distant last. Edwards said the experience had been amazing, largely due to the crowd’s enthusiasm. “This is the best day of my life,” he said. “Now I’m an Olympian.”Article contentinto the television announcer booth at Nakiska and offered up her thoughts on sex before a big athletic competition.
