On Feb. 13, 1988, the eyes of the world turned to Calgary as the XV Winter Olympic Games opened.

Then-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney said the event was stunning and one of the most beautiful he ever witnessed, adding: “I’ve seen a lot of ceremonies. Two Olympic flag raisers were kept out of the stadium because they weren’t wearing their proper credentials. Officials eventually got the matter cleared up and the pair was able to participate in the ceremonies. Four uniformed members of the Calgary police tactical squad — carrying rifles — were also denied entry due to lack of credentials, until a security supervisor was able to ascertain their identities.

The flag bearer for Austria — Leonhard Stock — missed his bus from the Canmore Village to the stadium, putting his participation in jeopardy. A helicopter was dispatched to pick him up in Canmore and he was transported to the helipad at Prince’s Island Park, where two city police officers were then able to get him to the stadium in time.

The wind gusted up to 60 km/hr on the day of the Opening Ceremonies, leading to the heartbreaking cancellation of an unprecedented hot-air balloon demonstration. More than two years in the planning, 105 hot air balloon pilots from around the world had gathered in Calgary and were scheduled to float their balloons over McMahon Stadium during the ceremonies. “I’m devastated,” said pilot Dave Knowler, also an organizer of the event.
