AN OCEAN conservation group has warned that a five percent decline in fisheries output could trigger a food security crisis.Oceana Philippines described the decline as “disturbing,” noting that it has driven production levels to their “lowest in two decades.”The group was referencing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority , which reported that marine municipal fisheries production dropped by 8.8 percent to 802.77 thousand metric tons in 2024. This marks the lowest level since 2002.
Meanwhile, the Kabataan Party-list, Gabriela Women’s Party-list and ACT Teachers Party-list have filed a House resolution urging the Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources to investigate the effects of the High Court’s decision.The 1987 Constitution, the Local Government Code and the Fisheries Code recognize the importance of granting preferential access to artisanal and municipal fisherfolk to municipal waters.
