Paris–Ernest John “EJ” Obiena was fourth in men’s pole vault on Monday at the Paris Olympics where Armand Duplantis proved once more he’s from another planet.
Obiena missed clearing 5.95 meters thrice to bomb out of the medals race among Duplantis, American Sam Kendricks and Greek Emmanouli Karalis. “I apologize for my performance, that’s how sports goes,” said Obiena, adding he needs to process what had transpired. The Swede easily cleared 6m in one attempt and sat in his own sweet time as Kendricks and Karalis tried to knock each other out in the final that was reduced to a battle for silver.
It wasn’t over for Duplantis as he flew to 6.10m to add the Olympic record to his world record of 6.24m he set last April in Xiamen. But he had much more left to showcase in this Olympics at the Stade de Francr–he set a new world and Olympic record at 6.25m to cap the last final for athletics that started at 7 p.m. and went on for more than three hours.Image credits:
