National University recovered from a sluggish start to turn back Far Eastern University, 62-60, for its first victory in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday night, Sept. 14, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Although no Bulldog finished in double figures, the team’s balanced effort proved to be enough down the stretch with PJ Palacielo showing the way with nine points that went with six rebounds. The Bulldogs then turned to one of their reliable and crafty guards Steve Nash Enriquez, who drilled a buzzer-beating triple as the Bulldogs greeted the half with a slim 33-31 advantage over the Tamaraws.

Both squads scrambled to dive for loose balls in the last three minutes with PJ Palacielo splitting his free throws to provisionally ice the game at 62-60, with only 6.4 ticks left. Mohamed Konateh paced the Tamaraws with a monster double-double performance of 17 points in a nearly perfect 6-of-7 inside shooting on top of 16 rebounds.
