Dan Meade has a building and a licence to process two million pounds of snow crab. Before he can cook, freeze and pack crab legs, though, Meade has to ...
By the end of the year, data from Statistics Canada showed just how much the market for snow crab had declined. TheEarlier this month Clifford Small, Conservative MP for Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame, said one of Canada’s key markets for snow crab, Japan, had chosen to increase its purchases of Russian crab this year, leaving Canadian crab exporters holding product.
“Japan increased the purchase of Russian crab by 400% this past October,” Small said in a press release. ”At a time when the world is placing sanctions on Russia for their unnecessary war on Ukraine, these purchases are leaving Atlantic Canadian harvesters dumbfounded.” With some product from 2022 waiting to be sold, the question is whether the markets will have absorbed that before the start of the new season in April.
And Meade will start out with a clear slate, without the financial weight of unsold crab inventory, processing costs and storage fees weighing him down.“The market was good, locally and export,” he said.
