Netflix said it would start canceling accounts of customers who haven’t used the service for a year or more.
The streaming giant announced that it is notifying users who haven’t watched anything for over a year since they subscribed, whether or not they want to keep their membership.
If Netflix members do not confirm that they want to keep subscribing the, the company said, their subscription will be automatically terminated. Netflix said that idle accounts — more popularly known as zombie accounts in the industry — only represent a few hundred thousand users, or less than half of one percent of its overall member base.
It is said, however, that customers who had their accounts canceled can easily rejoin the platform should they want to return. Those who rejoin within 10 months will still have their favorites, profile, viewing preferences, and account details just as they left them. According to Netflix director of product innovation Eddy Wu, the move is aimed at generating goodwill.Netflix currently has over 182 million subscribers.
