Governor Lacson confirms that the provincial government will continue to fund community kitchens providing meals for evacuees of the Kanlaon volcano eruption, despite the delay in receiving P50 million in aid from the Office of the President.
Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has reassured the public that the ongoing community kitchens providing meals for evacuees of the Kanlaon volcano eruption are fully funded by the provincial government. Lacson clarified that the Capitol still possesses remaining funds from the 2023 budget to cover the second round of community kitchens . The initial plan was to utilize the P50 million financial assistance provided by the Office of the President for this purpose.
However, Lacson explained that the provincial government is currently awaiting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s signature on the deed of donation for the P50 million. 'We have already sent the deed of donation to Malacañang twice, but we have not yet received a copy of the signed document,' he stated. Despite this delay, Lacson expressed confidence that the provincial government can sustain the food supply for the evacuees as it still has available funds from the previous year's budget. As of January 7th, the Department of Health in the Negros Island Region reported that the Kanlaon volcano eruption has displaced 2,810 families, comprising 8,959 individuals, who are currently residing in 21 evacuation centers across Regions 6 and 7. Out of these, 14 evacuation centers are situated in Negros Occidental
