The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is close to concluding its investigation into the 2020 murder of retired police general Wesley Barayuga and plans to file charges against the suspects within three weeks.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) pledged to file criminal charges against those responsible for the July 2020 assassination of retired police general and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary Wesley Barayuga within the next three weeks.
NBI Deputy Director for Forensic Investigation Service Ferdinand Lavin made this commitment during the 14th meeting of the House Quad Committee, a legislative panel investigating illegal drugs, Philippine offshore gambling operations, and extrajudicial killings during the Duterte administration. Lavin stated that the NBI is nearing the completion of its investigation into Barayuga's murder and is prepared to file charges against the implicated individuals in approximately three weeks. He explained that they are currently awaiting the results of forensic examinations conducted on electronic devices provided by Barayuga's wife to NBI agent Arnold Diaz in Iloilo. Warrants to examine these devices have been obtained, and they are undergoing analysis at the NBI's main office. Lavin assured the committee that the forensic reports are expected to be finalized within two to three weeks.During the hearing, Antipolo City Representative Romeo Acop, the senior vice chairman of the Quad Committee, sought clarification on Lavin's statement regarding the timeframe for filing charges. Lavin confirmed that charges would be filed within three weeks. The Barayuga assassination case gained significant traction in September when Police Lieutenant Colonel Santi Mendoza provided detailed testimony to the House mega panel about the ambush-slaying of the late PCSO board secretary on July 30, 2020, near the PCSO office in Mandaluyong City
