The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Southeastern Mindanao has strongly refuted recent social media claims alleging a data breach affecting applicants for NBI clearance between 2016 and 2024. Director Archie Albao emphasized that the NBI has not experienced any such incident and would have made an official announcement if a breach occurred.

The National Bureau of Investigation-Southeastern Mindanao Regional Office ( NBI -Semro) has issued a statement refuting recent claims circulating on social media that applicants for NBI clearance between 2016 and 2024 are vulnerable to a data breach . A Facebook post by Sass Rogando Sasot on January 21, 2025, which gained thousands of shares, warned the public that personal information submitted for NBI clearances may be in the hands of hackers, potentially exposing individuals to SMS scam fraud.

NBI-Semro Director Archie Albao, who was invited to the celebration of Emperor Naruhito's 65th birthday on February 13 at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City, addressed the issue in an interview with SunStar Davao. Albao stated that the post was unverified and emphasized that if the NBI had been hacked, it would be a nationwide event. He clarified that they had not experienced any such incident and asserted that the NBI would make an official announcement if a breach occurred. Sasot, with over 300,000 followers on Facebook, suggested that anyone who applied for clearance between 2016 and 2024 had their personal data compromised and urged people to share the message. She recommended getting a new cellphone number due to the potential for SMS scam fraud. Sasot also shared an article published by GBHackers News claiming a massive hacking incident involving the NBI, alleging that a dark web user named 'Zodiac Killer' leaked 3.6 GB of data from 2016 to 2024, compromising over 45 million records. The article stated that the leaked information, including full names, addresses, transaction IDs, contact information, and location data, could be highly valuable to cybercriminals. However, Albao reiterated that the NBI headquarters had not received any information or confirmation regarding the alleged data breach. He assured the public that the NBI's security measures remain in place and they would have issued an official statement if a breach had occurred
