The study, based on data from the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey, shows a significant increase in the number of women aged 15 to 49 living with their partners, quadrupling from 5 percent in 1993 to 19 percent in 2022. This trend is further supported by the 2021 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality survey, which indicates that approximately 12 percent of the 20 million youth aged 15 to 24 are currently cohabiting.The CPD attributes this shift to several factors, including evolving social perceptions and economic considerations. Many couples opt for cohabitation before marriage, viewing it as a practical step towards a committed relationship while they await the opportune moment for formalization. Additionally, the study highlights the role of parental influence, with many parents encouraging cohabitation, especially among younger couples, as a means to navigate potential challenges related to financial stability and familial pressures. Cohabitation is also seen as a pragmatic approach to manage unintended pregnancies, both morally and economically.Beyond financial and familial concerns, cohabitation is perceived as a means to reconcile differing religious beliefs and address potential conflicts within relationships. The study delves into the motivations behind cohabitation, revealing that while men tend to view it as a progression within a relationship, women often emphasize the romantic aspect.
