Atty. Don Artes, chairman of the MMDA and MMFF, proposes elevating the annual film festival to a national event to address concerns over theater assignments and potentially transfer its governance to a national government agency.
Atty. Don Artes , chairman of both the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Metro Manila Film Festival ( MMFF ), has proposed elevating the annual holiday film festival to a national event , moving beyond its current local scope. Following an assessment of the 50th MMFF , Artes believes this change would address issues related to theater assignments for film entries.
In an exclusive interview for the online entertainment program 'Meet The Press,' Artes stated, 'I think it's about time na gawing national itong MMFF at huwag na siyang ilimit sa Metro Manila. Kung gagawing national ito, mako-control ang mga sinehan.' (I think it's about time to make this MMFF national and stop limiting it to Metro Manila. If it's made national, the distribution of theater assignments will be controlled). He further explained that a national recognition would allow for a more equitable distribution of cinema screens across the Philippines and potentially facilitate a transfer of the festival's governance to a national government agency. Artes acknowledged that while the 50th MMFF was successful, gross receipts haven't reached expected levels. He attributed this partly to a decline in audience budgets for movie viewing and the limited number of family-oriented films this year. Artes highlighted the success of 'Rewind,' a film starring real-life couple Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, which grossed P924 million, and noted that several other films also performed well at the box office. He emphasized that his definition of success extends beyond a single high-grossing film, recognizing that a wider range of movies achieved notable commercial success. Discussions regarding the transfer of the MMFF to a national government agency could commence later this year, ahead of the 51st edition. Artes expressed his willingness to make necessary recommendations to Malacañang to initiate this conversation. The full interview, powered by Podcast Network, will be available on Spotify on January 18th
