Mitsubishi Motors Indonesia (MMKI) marks a significant achievement with the production of its one millionth vehicle. The milestone is celebrated at the company's Bekasi Regency plant, highlighting Indonesia's role as a key production hub for Mitsubishi in Southeast Asia.
MITSUBISHI Motors Corp. (MMC) recently announced that its Indonesia n production hub, PT Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia ( MMKI ), has achieved a cumulative total of one million vehicles produced. This milestone was celebrated during a ceremony at the plant last December, attended by Indonesia n government officials, Japanese dignitaries, MMC executives, and key industry partners.
MMKI is the facility responsible for manufacturing the Mitsubishi Xpander, Mitsubishi's top-selling model in the Philippines. Since its introduction in 2017, the Xpander has gained significant popularity in Filipino households due to its compact multipurpose vehicle (MPV) design, catering to the needs of both families and businesses. The Xpander's success highlights Indonesia's crucial role as a vital production and export hub for Mitsubishi in Southeast Asia. MMKI exports vehicles to approximately 50 countries worldwide. Located at the GIIC Industrial Estate in Bekasi Regency, MMKI began production in April 2017 with an initial annual capacity of 160,000 vehicles. By fiscal year 2019, this capacity increased to 220,000 units, serving both Indonesia's domestic market and regional exports. Besides the Xpander, the facility also produces models such as the Pajero Sport, Colt L300, and the newly introduced XForce and Minicab EV. Takao Kato, president and CEO of MMC, credited the Indonesian government and various partners for supporting MMKI's growth and success. 'The vehicles produced here are sold throughout Indonesia and exported to other countries in the Asean region,' he said. 'This facility plays an important role as a key Asean production site. We will continue to roll out highly appealing products and contribute to the further development of the Indonesian economy.' The Xpander's popularity has not gone unnoticed in the Philippines, where it consistently tops Mitsubishi's sales charts. In February 2023, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and MMC began discussions around the possibility of manufacturing the Xpander locally. Should an agreement be reached, Mitsubishi could benefit from government incentives, and Filipino customers might soon see a Philippine-made Xpander. For now, however, the Xpander remains one of the key exports from MMKI's Indonesian plant — an arrangement that has propelled Mitsubishi's success across the region. As MMKI marks the production of its one millionth vehicle, the company appears set on strengthening its presence both at home and abroad, with the Xpander at the forefront of its Asean strategy
