“I would do it again, no hesitation whatsoever,' says commercial diver Donnie Mahaney about the community-led search for the Miss Ally and her crew in February 2013 in the days following the tragedy that claimed five lives.

The fishing vessel Crustacean Frustration steams away from the Falls Point wharf on Feb. 21, 2013, while the Slave Driver loaded with diving gear gets ready to follow. The two vessels were among a flotilla of vessels that went in search of the capsized hull of the Miss Ally that was still floating on the Atlantic in the days following the disaster which took the lives of five young fishermen from Shelburne County.

The overturned hull of the Miss Ally floating on the Atlantic left too many unanswered questions for the families and the community.“I remember being at Todd’s and they came in and said, 'We’ll take care of it,'” says Opal Malone.'They' were four local divers led by commercial diver Donnie Mahaney and seasoned fishermen from the community.

There was no crew. No bodies. The vessel was severely damaged. The wheelhouse and skylight in the forward deck were gone.“I’d do it again in a heartbeat,” he says. In November 2013, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil and Vice-Adm. Duncan Miller, retired presented Medals of Bravery to the four divers who dove on the capsized Miss Ally under extreme weather conditions. Malone said the weather was almost like The Perfect Storm that night, with one storm coming in, as another was going out.
