John Tory will stay on as mayor to ensure the passage of the 2023 budget, which could mean he will occupy the city’s top job for days, if not weeks, after announcing his resignation.
Budget chief Gary Crawford emerged from the mayor’s office Monday afternoon and confirmed that despite Tory announcing Friday he will step down, the mayor intends to remain in his role at least until the budget goes to council this week.
If a majority of councillors vote on Wednesday to amend the spending plan, the mayor has up to 10 days to veto their changes. Council then has up to 15 days to override the veto by a two-thirds majority, after which the budget is considered adopted.“He is committed to ensuring that this budget gets passed. If it means sticking around for a couple more weeks, I’m sure that’s something he will be doing,” he said.revealed he had a relationship with a former member of his office staff.
“There are a number of us on council who think that the mayor should stay,” said Coun. John Burnside , one of the councillors involved talks to urge Tory to stay.The councillor said it would be good for the stability of the city for Tory to stick around, and that most residents don’t want another election just months after the October contest in which the mayor easily won a third term. He said he is speaking to his colleagues to see how many would support Tory staying in office.
