“The boys are always going to be on my mind forever,” says Cole Nickerson’s mother Marlene Crowell about the February 2013 crew of the Miss Ally. “They went fishing...and they didn’t come back. Life after that has changed... It's not easy losing a child.'
For the second year in a row, the River Head Rollers were the winners of the annual Cole Nickerson Memorial Tournament. KATHY JOHNSON - Kathy JohnsonA NOTE TO READERS: This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Miss Ally tragedy that claimed the lives of five young Shelburne County fishermen in February 2013. The crew has forever remained in the hearts and on the minds of people in southwestern Nova Scotia.
Five local teams – many of whom had players who were friends or family to Cole – took to the ice to remember him; to raise money for a local charity; and for the chance to win the tourney championship prize: a beer keg that serves as a trophy and a banner in memory of their lost friend and teammate. “Despite the weather, we had great crowds for all three days of the tournament,” said organizer Scott Symonds.
The tournament raised more than $5,000 for the society, said Cole’s step-mom Karen Nickerson. The previous year the money raised at the tournament went to bursaries for graduates at Barrington Municipal High School.
