Meralco Bolts secure a crucial victory against Hong Kong Eastern Lions in the Season 49 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner's Cup, marking a strong start to the new year.
Meralco kicked off 2025 with a resounding victory, defeating Hong Kong Eastern 88-83 in the Season 49 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. The Bolts showcased impressive hustle and defense, overcoming the Lions’ second-half comeback. Despite injuries to Allein Maliksi (knee) and the recent recovery of other players, Meralco secured their fourth win against two losses.
Import Akil Anthony Mitchell, sporting a protective mask, led the charge with a stellar performance, registering 31 points — 18 in the third quarter — along with 14 rebounds, five assists, and seven steals. Bong Quinto contributed 16 points, shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Aaron Black and Chris Newsome added nine points each. Meralco forced 21 turnovers from Hong Kong Eastern, capitalizing on them for 20 points, while limiting their own turnovers to 14, resulting in seven points for the Lions. This victory marked the end of Meralco’s back-to-back defeats at the close of 2024. Coach Luigi Trillo expressed satisfaction with the team’s defensive performance, stating, “We knew they would come back in the second half, but we know how to hold the fort. It was the best defensive game.” He added, “It is nice to get our rhythm back and we are confident.” Although Meralco held a 28-19 lead in the second period, they were unable to create a significant distance from Hong Kong Eastern, keeping the game close. However, the Lions failed to capitalize on crucial opportunities and secure the momentum, particularly in the final seconds. CJ McLaughlin led Hong Kong Eastern with 28 points, 18 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and four blocks, while Kobe Lam added 16 points and seven assists
