A Learjet 55 carrying a young Mexican girl home from a Philadelphia hospital crashed Friday, causing a fatal explosion and scattering debris. The death toll has risen to seven, including six people on board and one person in a car. Nineteen others were injured.
A medical jet carrying a Mexican child home from a hospital in Philadelphia crashed Friday, killing seven people and wounding 19 others. The twin-engine Learjet 55 plummeted towards a busy Philadelphia neighborhood, exploding on impact and showering wreckage over homes and vehicles. Officials initially reported that all six on board—the young girl, her mother, and members of the flight and medical crews—were killed. They were all Mexican nationals.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said Saturday that at least one other person, who was in a car, had also been killed. She warned that the death toll could rise as authorities work to identify everyone who was in the impact area. The crash, the second major aviation disaster in the United States this week, occurred Friday when the jet crashed in a residential area four to six blocks wide. A fireball was followed by the ignition of several fires on the ground. Debris was also found in a remote area, suggesting something may have happened to the aircraft before the final descent. The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board are launching an investigation into the crash. They are already probing a separate incident that occurred Wednesday, when a passenger jet operated by an American Airlines subsidiary collided with a Black Hawk helicopter during landing at Reagan National Airport near Washington D.C
