Mark McGowan has revealed the hefty price tag that taxpayers have been forced to pay for the legal battle between the WA Premier and Queensland billionaire Clive Palmer.

Mr Palmer sued the WA Premier - who then counter sued - over defamatory comments made during press conferences at the start of the pandemic which have cost WA residents over $2million in legal fees.

But the state and myself could not give in to Palmer in relation to these matters.The legal proceedings were set into motion in 2020 as the two political figures feuded over Western Australia’s COVID-19 response, mainly its hard border closure policy which was in place for two years.

Meanwhile the judge found nine defamatory statements made by the Palmer United Party founder which included implying the WA Premier was corrupt and had passed laws to give himself exemptions during the extended lockout. “Otherwise, people of means can just sue us from office. That means the only people who can become premiers or prime ministers or ministers in government are multi-multi-millionaires or billionaires.
