A new report reveals a 36 percent decrease in the volume of marine waste and a 42 percent reduction in weight from 2023 to 2024 in Manila Bay. While this progress is encouraging, the report emphasizes the need for stricter waste management practices and increased public awareness.

A new report reveals a significant decrease in marine waste within Manila Bay. The 2024 Marine Litter Monitoring Survey Report, conducted by the EcoWaste Coalition in partnership with De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, indicates a 36 percent reduction in the volume of marine waste and a 42 percent decrease, or nearly half, in the total weight of collected waste compared to 2023. The survey encompassed ten project sites across Cavite, the National Capital Region, and Bataan.

Despite this encouraging progress, the report emphasizes the continued need for stricter waste management practices. While acknowledging the 'significant strides in reducing litter,' EcoWaste's Enhancement of Marine Litter Management project officer Wes Lipana stresses that the predominance of plastics in marine debris underlines the urgency for collective action. He calls for government and public efforts to address this persistent challenge. The report highlights that plastics still constitute a major component of marine debris, accounting for 91 percent of the total waste collected. Furthermore, seasonal data reveals a 16 percent surge in litter counts during the wet months compared to the dry season, underscoring the ongoing difficulties. The findings provide valuable insights into the current state of marine debris within the surveyed region, but they are limited to these specific areas. EcoWaste recommends several key actions to combat marine litter effectively: enforcing existing environmental laws, expanding information campaigns at the barangay level to promote waste segregation and sustainable disposal practices, adopting standardized cleanup methods for improved data collection and efficiency, and developing a comprehensive, integrated marine litter management plan for Manila Bay involving both government and community initiatives. Lipana emphasizes the need for sustained commitment from all stakeholders to ensure the long-term health of Manila Bay
