President Ferdinand Marcos announced on Tuesday the Philippines will not send its navy warships to disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea (WPS)

President Ferdinand Marcos announced on Tuesday the Philippines will not send its navy warships to disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea consistent with his standing policy of de-escalation in the region.

In a chance interview with Malacañang reporters, the Commander-in-Chief said the Philippines is “not at war” with any country, so there is no need for him to deploy navy warships in the WPS. He said Manila will not participate in any activity that may be viewed as escalatory.“We are not at war. We don’t need navy warships. All we are doing is resupplying our fishermen, protecting our territorial rights. Again, it will be provocative and will be seen as an escalation. We don’t do that.

This is in response to ongoing maritime tensions with China, which never receded in enforcing its bullying and salami slicing tactics in the South China Sea, including parts of the WPS that remain under the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. President Marcos, nevertheless, assured that the Philippines will continue defending its territory through peaceful means. These include routine resupply missions to fishermen and soldiers stationed in the regional waters as part of the country’s maritime defense.

“We are going to continue to perform our mission. We will never be part of an escalation in the situation in WPS. If we look at the evolution of the situation in the WPS, the Philippines has never been an agent of escalation of tensions,” President Marcos told reporters in a chance interview.Cadiz City Students empowered with robotics and programming skills by BingoPlus Foundation
