Press secretary Beatrix “Trixie” Cruz-Angeles confirmed on Thursday Yogi Filemon Ruiz took his oath of office as officer-in-charge of BOC. “President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. sworn into office yesterday, 20 July, 2022 Yogi Filemon Ruiz as Acting Commissioner, Bureau of Customs,” Angeles said in a brief statement. Under Marcos’ Memorandum Circular No. 1, Ruiz is expected to become the OIC of BOC until the end of the month or a replacement has been finally appointed.
Prior to his new designation, Ruiz was the head of the Enforcement and Security Services of BOC since during the term of former Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña. Ruiz is expected to face the challenge of cleaning the improving of BOC, which is perceived to be one of the most corrupt agencies in government, as well as also to combat smuggling, which are among the commitments made by Marcos.
To note, the Senate committee of the whole linked Guerrero and other Customs personnel to agricultural smugglers. Guerrero denied the allegation.
