A 24-year-old man, Archie Aragon, was apprehended by authorities in Bacolod City , Philippines, for breaching the Commission on Elections ( COMELEC ) gun ban . The incident occurred on Sunday, January 12, at approximately 11:35 p.m. in Barangay 28. Aragon, a resident of Purok Arseo, Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City , was discovered carrying an improvised firearm, commonly referred to as 'Pogakhang', during a routine visibility patrol by police operatives. Liberty Indiape, spokesperson for the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), confirmed that the police recovered an improvised firearm loaded with live 20-gauge shotgun ammunition and a metal hacksaw blade from Aragon's possession. Indiape further stated that an investigation is underway to ascertain if Aragon has any links to recent robbery incidents in Bacolod. This marks the first arrest for violating the COMELEC gun ban in Bacolod since the election period commenced on January 12. Aragon is currently under detention at the custodial facility of Police Station 6. He faces charges under Republic Act (RA) 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and RA 7166, the election gun ban. The gun ban, in effect from January 12 to June 11, 2025, aims to maintain peace and order during the upcoming May 12 elections. Only members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other designated law enforcement agencies in their prescribed uniforms while on official duty are permitted to carry firearms during this period. Acting City Election Officer Revo Sorbito emphasized that police checkpoints, limited to visual searches only, will be implemented. Officers are strictly prohibited from conducting body searches or inspecting vehicle trunks and bags. Sorbito appealed to motorists to cooperate with checkpoint procedures to prevent any untoward incidents
