As we welcome 2024, the Metro Manila Film Festival ( MMFF ) is still in full swing, now down to its final two days before wrapping up on January 7. This year's festival is particularly special as it marks the MMFF 's 50th year — a milestone for Filipino cinema.However, as the festival draws to a close, the conversations surrounding it have been anything but quiet.

Ongoing debates, controversies, and recommendations have sparked discussions about how the MMFF can continue to evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of the Philippine film industry. From ticket prices to the selection process, and even the very structure of the festival itself, many voices have chimed in on what works and what needs to change.Building on these discussions, and my previous article on the MMFF's unique nature, this follow-up dives into practical recommendations that could help make the festival more inclusive, equitable and impactful — not just for filmmakers, but for audiences as well.Challenges and recommendations1. Make ticket prices more accessible. The current ticket prices, ranging from ₱400 to ₱700, are prohibitive for many Filipinos, especially when the average daily wage hovers around ₱650. This financial disparity limits the ability of the average moviegoer to watch more than one or two films during the festival period.Recommendations — Introduce multi-film bundles: Offer discounted packages for audiences who want to watch multiple films, encouraging them to explore lesser-known entries alongside mainstream ones. For example, a three-film package for ₱900 could make the festival more accessible.Implement weekday discounts: Provide reduced ticket prices during weekdays or non-peak hours, making it easier for budget-conscious audiences to participate.2. Revise the cinema allocation system. Historically, only three out of 10 MMFF entries turn a profit, with the rest struggling to compet
