Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium initiates a major recall of Coke, Sprite, and other beverages across several European countries after high levels of chlorate are detected. Chlorate, a compound potentially harmful to children, was found in affected cans and bottles distributed since November.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium announced a major recall of Coke, Sprite, and other beverages on Monday after detecting elevated levels of chlorate, a substance that may pose health risks. The affected products, including cans and glass bottles, were distributed in Belgium, the Netherlands, Britain, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since November. The company stated that the quantity of drinks involved was significant, although they did not provide a precise figure.

Chlorate is a compound that can be found in food as a byproduct of chlorine disinfectants commonly used in water treatment and food processing. In 2015, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a scientific opinion stating that long-term exposure to chlorate could pose a potential health concern for children, particularly those with mild or moderate iodine deficiency. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium emphasized that the majority of the affected and unsold products had already been removed from store shelves and they were actively taking measures to remove all remaining products from the market. However, the company's French branch reported that independent expert analysis concluded that the probability of an associated risk was very low. They added that they had not received any consumer complaints regarding this issue. While affected batches of Coke and Fuze Tea were delivered to France, the recall order did not currently apply to the French market. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners apologized for the recall, which was initiated following a routine check at their production site in Ghent. The affected products carried production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE and included brands such as Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico. The company is in contact with relevant authorities in each of the affected markets
