I love Charlottetown and am very encouraged by two important statements made by the city in the past year. First, thehighlighted that traffic congestion is not solved by road construction. That might seem wrong, but road construction just encourages more traffic. Getting cars off the road, and solving congestion, requires better infrastructure for transit, cyclists and pedestrians.

The new school year has begun. I believe Islanders should celebrate the steps the Public School Branch has taken toin the 2023-24 school year. Even more importantly, we should be celebrating the implementation of structured literacy through the Fundations program. The much needed change to the P.E.I. literacy curriculum was previously implemented for kindergarten and Grade 1 students. This year it will be introduced for Grade 2 Island students.

These are great positive changes, however the big question must be asked: What improvements to literacy education are being implemented to support grades 3 to 12 students who are not well served by the Balanced Literacy curriculum? Island parents need to be asking the Public Schools Branch and the Department of Education how they can ensure their child is getting the education they need.

Parents need to ask these questions so they can work together with educators to achieve the best for Island students.Paul Bennett, left, spoke at a June 6 P.E.I. literacy forum organized by Tammy Norden at the Summerside Rotary Library. - ContributedSaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
