A vehicle belonging to the convoy of a purported lawmaker was observed using the EDSA busway, leading to a traffic violation citation. The incident highlights the strict regulations governing the use of the EDSA busway, which is primarily intended for authorized public transportation, emergency vehicles, and specific government officials.
A vehicle belonging to the convoy of a purported lawmaker was observed traveling on the EDSA busway on January 23. The SUV, identified by the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT), displayed a House of Representatives seal despite bearing a standard license plate. SAICT personnel promptly issued a traffic violation notice to the driver. The report, citing Unang Balita, did not confirm whether the lawmaker was present within the convoy.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has clearly outlined the permissible vehicles on the EDSA busway. Authorized vehicles include those granted special permits or franchises by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to operate on the EDSA busway route. This also encompasses on-duty ambulances, fire trucks, and Philippine National Police vehicles. Additionally, service vehicles engaged in tasks related to the EDSA Busway Project, such as construction, security, janitorial, and maintenance, are permitted. High-ranking officials, including the President of the Philippines, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, are also authorized to use the EDSA busway.Motorists caught utilizing the EDSA busway without proper authorization face escalating penalties. First-time violators will be charged a P5,000 fine. A second offense results in a P10,000 fine, a one-month driver's license suspension, and mandatory participation in a road safety seminar. The third offense carries a P20,000 fine and a one-year driver's license suspension. A fourth offense incurs a P30,000 fine and a recommendation to the Land Transportation Office for the revocation of the driver's license. —KG, GMA Integrated New
